With the enactment of the Healthy Workplaces Healthy Family Act (HWHFA) in 2014, the Legislature has added yet another layer of leave benefits public employers must be prepared to administer.  While most public employees already have paid sick leave benefits available to them, the HWHFA extends such benefits to part-time, temporary, and seasonal employees who might not previously have had such benefits.  Moreover, the enactment of paid sick leave merely adds to the already existing plethora of statutory leave benefits available to public employees: FMLA, CFRA, PDLL, worker’s compensation, etc.  This session will provide three case studies addressing issues at the intersection of the many leave laws employers must administer.  In addition to addressing the above-mentioned statutory leaves, this session also will examine a case study involving leave as a disability accommodation.
